"This mother polar bear and her two two-year-old cubs pause at the ocean's edge as they contemplate swimming to the next island to scavenge for bird eggs. We watched this family from a long distance, using powerful telephoto lenses to stay back and out of the way as they combed the islands for nesting birds. I had always wanted to document this behavior but never had the chance until now. Even during this opportunity, I never did get photos of them slurping down eggs since much of the action took place a long way off. Some people have speculated that polar bears could sustain themselves on a few bird eggs if the ice completely disappears. Unfortunately, these animals are much too large to exist on a few bird eggs during the annual nesting season."
