Happy World Diabetes Day!💙💙💙
I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was five, and it’s been part of my life every day for over 13 years. Growing up, I was so embarrassed and felt so alone. I remember the endless needles, insulin shots, and all the fear that came with it. When I got my insulin pump, I did everything I could to hide it because I felt like no one understood that it wasn’t my fault. I’ll never forget going to Camp Kudzu for the first time, after putting it off for years because I felt like a “bad diabetic” who couldn’t keep up. But thank god I went. The friendships I made there are some of the best I’ve ever had. Being able to connect with others and share my struggles felt empowering, not shameful.
There are still days where I hate it, days where I’m burnt out and it takes everything to keep going. As hard as it gets, it’ll always be part of me, and I’m grateful for the strength and the community it’s brought me.
To all the T1Ds, happy World Diabetes Day! You can do the thing.💙💙💙
