Queer Ecology, Trans talks and wildlife storytelling...
On Sunday I gave a talk about my journey into the world of storytelling, writing and film making, as a trans non binary woman of colour, focusing on wildlife and conservation, with the outcome being to show the all-queer and trans crowd who attended (an incredibly refreshing experience of not needing to explain any of my identity and simply speaking about what I love) that - in contrast to what they'd been told - interest and involvement in the world of nature is NOT a luxury, nor is it something they should be allowed despite their identities, but in fact it is a RIGHT, and also that they are MORE worthy of being involved and presenting as they are in green spaces.
Why?
Because nature is queer. If we take queerness as a word that births all sorts of colourful non conformation, that releases us from the black and white of heteronormative society, into the world of spectrums and difference, that seeks to explain our existence as one of chaos and not of narrow lanes and binaries, then this is the best way of explaining nature.
We have been taught wrong. We have had centralised in our brains a certain way of thinking about the world, a way that puts the "one or the other" way of thinking forefront and so seeks to clip the beautiful chaos of nature and queerness. This limits our understanding of ecology and of science in general.
Chaos is beautiful and I hope that through understanding my journey as a queer person of colour in nature we begin to move towards working with it and not fighting against it.
