Polar bears roam the sea ice thousands of miles north from where many of us live. Yet everyday elements of our lives—the electricity running through our houses and the gas we put into our cars—are connected to the bear’s future. Sea ice loss due to human-caused climate warming is the greatest threat to polar bears. News about possible climate and clean energy legislation in the United States is hugely heartening, but federal governments are just one piece of the puzzle—in any country. Local communities and governments hold an equally important lever of power and can play a big role in speeding up our transition to cleaner and decentralized energy.
