Στο μικρό αυτό θραύσμα από πίνακα του 6ου αι. π.Χ. η Αφροδίτη, θεά της ομορφιάς, του έρωτα και της ηδονής, κρατάει στα χέρια δύο γυμνά παιδιά, που τα ονόματά τους είναι γραμμένα πάνω από τα κεφάλια τους. Στα αριστερά είναι ο Ίμερος, προσωποποίηση της ερωτικής επιθυμίας, και στα δεξιά ο Έρωτας, θεός της ερωτικής αγάπης. Παρότι ο Ησίοδος αναφέρει ότι ο Έρωτας και ο Ίμερος γεννήθηκαν πριν από την Αφροδίτη, και μάλιστα ήταν παρόντες στη δική της γέννηση, εδώ είναι αυτή που τους κρατάει αγκαλιά σαν μητέρα. Ίσως ο καλλιτέχνης χρησιμοποιεί τα παιδιά απλά για να υπαινιχθεί τις διαφορετικές ερωτικές υποστάσεις της θεάς. EN 👇 In this small fragment from a plaque that dates in the 6th century BC Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, love and pleasure, holds in her arms two naked boys whose names are written above their heads. To the left is Himeros, personification of sexual desire, and to the right Eros, personification of romantic love. Although Hesiod states that Eros and Himeros were born before Aphrodite, and in fact they were also present during her birth, in this depiction Aphrodite is the one carrying them like a mother.
