Some skin lesions and rashes require more time and close scrutiny. Others are clearly benign or straightforward, and do not require more than a glance. If you had a skin examination and it felt quick, it could be because you do not have any concerning lesions, which would be a good thing.
I have gotten in the habit of calling out diagnoses and short explanations for everything I see during my skin exam, even if I'm not worried about it and I know it's benign. I think it helps my patients to know that I did indeed consider those lesions, and didn't miss them. I use my dermatoscope to illuminate the body as I'm searching, so that I don't miss even subtle changes in the color or character of the skin. I also go much slower on the face (especially the nose and ears) as these are places where skin cancers can be very subtle.
A quick exam doesn't mean hasty counseling. I like spending extra time with patients to answer all questions and go over things in-depth, especially for new patients who haven't heard my explanations before. I find that by spending more time in discussion with the patient for education, it ultimately reduces time spent later because the patient understands the diagnoses and rationales for different treatments, and there's a more trusting relationship.
If you're feeling like you're not getting enough time with your derm, here's a few options to consider:
1) if you have multiple skin issues (rashes, cosmetic questions, and on top of that a full skin examination with questions about skin cancers), it could be too much for one visit, and you may need to schedule separate appointments to address everything.
2) Bring a list of questions, so you ensure your concerns are answered
3) If it still doesn't feel right and you aren't getting the care you need, try out a different provider and see if you can find a better fit!
