Don’t think of the threat of A.I. in apocalyptic terms (I, Robot & Terminator)...it’ll be it’s seemingly slow integration (algorithms in social media, A.I. art generation etc), that will be our undoing... and I reckon the threat is more alarming than climate change...it’s all quite fun now (and it truly is), but as I play with Midjourney, Dall-E, Instagram, Disco Diffusion, YouTube - I also have a massive sense of cognitive dissonance...I keep thinking about “value” and “meaning”- and how value is derived from pain, sacrifice and the stories about the processes of how things were made. In the world of A.I., I fear we lose so much of that - and it feels like there’s a deep existential “meaning crisis” on the horizon...it’s already seeping into so many of our social interactions...It is why we are so divided, even though we are so connected (Haidt - Coddling of the American Mind). There is no stopping what is inevitable (partly because it is exciting and easy - eliciting those quick dopamine highs), but perhaps a return to more ancient traditions regarding community, faith, silence, meditation will be our balm...I don’t want to preach, but I will ring the alarm.
