During our last voyage on the SeaLegacy 1, our crew was constantly surrounded by nature’s strange and beautiful light shows. Each night the sky was filled to the brim with stars while the currents beneath us blazed with bioluminescent algae. But some of our ocean’s more dazzling displays can only be revealed through the use of special lights. With our cameras in hand, my team and I slipped into the muffled darkness on a night dive to capture the biofluorescence of corals; a process in which corals absorb UV rays from the sun and re-emit them in a completely different colour. With the help of blue lights and camera filters, we watched the world around us transform into an alien seascape bursting with neon life. It was a stunning and humbling reminder of just how little we know about our mysterious ocean. Thank you @vpieribone for the awesome light scientific guidance and thank you @sheltondupreez for the underwater filming camaraderie. 🎥 @Paul Nicklen 💬 @SeaLegacy #oneoceanglobal #underwateralgae #coral #oneoceanresearch #oceanlife #underwaterphotography #savetheocean #savetheearth #motherearth #sealegacy #oneoceaneducation #oneocean #changetheworld #oceanconservation #underwater
