“I’ve done this time and time again. School shootings. Presidential elections. Celebrity deaths. It always felt strange to have such a massive, potentially history-altering event occur and decide that a few hours of breathing room should be enough time to seem sensitive to our audiences. I know media is a business. We need to make money. In order to do that, we need advertisers. In order to get advertisers, you need to have a well-engaged audience. In order to have an active audience, you have to give in to the demands of the algorithm—and the algorithm doesn’t like it when you stop posting. It feels like this toxic cycle that we can’t escape. Even now, as the bad news seems to be piling up, I feel strange promoting my work on Instagram.
