#Exhibition José Parlá 《Breathing》 2022. 10. 27 – 2022. 12. 4 Gana Art Center Gana Art is pleased to present a solo exhibition titled Breathing by José Parlá (b. 1973), an artist showcasing his global artistic range, from creative abstract paintings that combine the features of street art and calligraphy, to large murals, photographs, videos, and sculptures. The first exhibition in two years since Parlá’s first solo exhibition took place at Gana Art Nineone in 2020, this exhibition, which is prepared in collaboration with curator Matt Black, is a space to unveil his new series, Breathing, a set of paintings that share the exhibition’s title. This event is also particularly significant in that it announces the return of an artist who found himself at the crossroads between life and death; Parlá was hospitalized for several months in 2021 after contracting COVID-19 and falling into a coma. As if to contradict a medical diagnosis that cast doubt on his future ability to paint, Parlá recovered and focused his strong will to live onto his work by adding deeper colors and sharper lines. The results can be viewed at Gana Art Center, following showings at the Library Street Collective in Detroit and the Brooklyn Museum in New York. @joseparla @mattblackstudio 가나아트는 스트리트 아트와 캘리그래피의 특성을 결합한 독창적인 추상회화에서부터 대형 벽화, 사진, 비디오, 조각에 이르기까지 다양한 예술 세계를 보여주고 있는 호세 팔라(José Parlá, b. 1973)의 개인전, 《Breathing》을 개최한다. 본 전시는 전시의 제목과 동명의 연작 회화인 그의 신작 <Breathing>을 공개하는 자리이다. 특히 이번 전시는 2021년 코로나바이러스 감염으로 수개월간 병원에서 생사의 기로를 넘나들었던 작가가 그 복귀를 알리는 자리라는 점에서 그 의미를 더한다. 더는 그림을 그리지 못할 수도 있다는 의사의 진단을 반증하듯, 그는 다시 일어나 더욱 강인한 생명에의 의지를 보다 심도 있는 색과 선을 통해 작품에 옮겨냈다. 그 결과물을 디트로이트의 라이브러리 스트리트 컬렉티브(Library Street Collective), 뉴욕의 브루클린 미술관(Brooklyn Museum)에 이어 가나아트센터에서 관람할 수 있다.
