The National Portrait Gallery pays respect to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her family on the day of her funeral. Throughout her 70-year reign, Her Majesty represented graciousness, humanity and stability during times of enormous social change. She will be remembered for her devotion to a life of service, and her position as an important figurehead for the UK and the Commonwealth. Photographer Polly Borland (b. 1959) was one of few photographers commissioned by the Palace to take a portrait for Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. This unconventional royal portrait is one of two resulting from a very brief sitting with Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace. The portrait is now iconic for its witty and contemporary aesthetic.
