But they caught me this morning as I flipped through the memories from all these years. •First demo ever of “Waving.” I knew @alacamoire was a monster rhythm section arranger but I asked if he did much string stuff. He answered with this. •Tech @arenastage working that ill-fated downer of an Act 1 closer, “Part of Me.” Sorry to all involved but love you so, so much! •Last minute preview rewrites in DC. Cynthia and Larry have new lyrics and parts in “Requiem” and @park24hrs / @jenniferlaurathompson have 10 mins to rehearse it with band before performing that night. Union rules wouldn’t allow for sound to play in the theater so this was our workaround. How I adored them in this moment, how I adore them now. •Openings of musicals are hard. In the tradition of so many of our predecessors, @benjpasek and I wrote this one last after a long succession of duds. We had reached a breaking point and threw some spaghetti. Few of these lyrics ever made it in (s/o to #Waldo) but it was a start. You can just feel the desperation and burnout in this one amid the clunky guitar playing and hammy salesmanship. •Cut to years later. The ones in between got so busy from @2stnyc to Bway and beyond. And lots of babies w/ @asherpaul . But I love this vid of @bensplatt rehearsing for a TV appearance because it’s still him and it’s still Evan and there will never be moments exactly like this again. The community of artists and beautiful humans who came together to make this, and those who joined along the way, will for forever (ugh pardon me but had to) be a family. There are so many to thank, and too many to tag. But you know who you are and you, like me, are experiencing the great pride and pain of being part of a beautiful chapter that’s coming to a close. We did it. Together. And now our odd little creation, made by this extraordinary family, goes off to meet the world. The next chapter on the journey. Goodbye, Broadway. Goodbye, Evan. We were lucky to have you because you gave us...us. And knowing that is what lets us wave goodbye. Blink and it’ll be over, friends. Blink and it’ll be over. 💙💙💙
