As Soweto Kinch walked the empty streets during lockdown, he was immediately struck by the imperial emblems, flags and statues that, in the previous bustle of city life, went relatively unnoticed. “It fascinates me how we’re all acquainted with an unspoken architectural and symbolic language of power” says Soweto. “How do these monuments or myths affect how we see ourselves as a nation?” In the video, Soweto explores this idea of being under a spell—the phenomenon that he names White Juju—that became the inspiration for the work of the same name.
