After her diagnosis in college with a rare genetic disease, Kelcie became a wheelchair user — reshaping her identity and experiences in nature while proving just how inaccessible most outdoor spaces are to anyone with a disability. “I realized that environmentalism and climate action and environmental science have traditionally excluded disabled people. When I think about why, it’s probably because they haven’t been given the opportunity to go outside and fall in love with nature. I don’t want people to be excluded from the outdoors just because they have a disability or they have a different body or they’re from a different group.
