I met Reem in the summer of 2019. I organized a music residency in Marseille with artists and producers I usually work with. We had never met at the time, just barely talked on Instagram. She flew from Los Angeles to the South of France alone without knowing any of the people who were there. During that week, her positivity and her effortless ability of bringing people together contaminated everyone present there. We then decided to try and work together on a new EP and reinvent her project visually. @iammalca and I worked with her on the EP in Paris first, then in Los Angeles. The first track that resulted of this work was Ismak, a pop single in Arabic and English, that pays tribute to the Ardah, a traditional war chant and dance from Saudi Arabia. It gave us the DNA of the project: the story of Tamtam, a Saudi singer born and raised in Riyadh, KSA largely influenced by American culture, who eventually ended up living in Los Angeles; who started to grow a will to reclaim her heritage and culture in her music. Being a Saudi artist in the current international pop music ecosystem seems to be a tough challenge, but totally reflects the energy present in the kingdom, where women are claiming their rights and a vast and diverse creative scene is progressively imposing itself. For the video of Ismak, we collaborated with Bleu Nuit who were amazing allies for this first release, understanding perfectly the do’s and don’ts of the imagery of an Arab artist and working on extreme conditions to make it happen, shooting on film in the middle of the desert in the summer.
