In honor of the great German-Jewish poet Gertrud Kolmar, yellow decorated her now namesake park 💛💛💛💛& her poem, “The Poetess,” was read aloud during the rededication of the park! @chicagosmayor, city officials and community residents formally re-dedicated newly renamed park in honor of German-Jewish author and poet Gertrud Kolmar. Kolmar Park, located in the Irving Park community, is officially the 72nd Chicago park named in honor of a woman. The one-acre neighborhood park features a junior baseball field, soft surface playground and a sandbox.
Kolmar's great nephew, Paul Chodziesner, flew in from Australia to represent his family at the celebratory event where a memorial tree was planted in her honor & will live in remembrance of the poet murdered in the Holocaust.
“It is truly an honor and privilege to celebrate the life and contributions of Gertrud Kolmar and rename this beautiful park in her honor,” said Rosa Escareño, Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO. “It is our hope that everyone who visits this park is reminded of Kolmar’s courageousness amidst one of the most horrific periods in history and her literary contributions that continue to uplift and inspire us to this day.”
A special thanks to Merry Marwig & Daniel Egel-Weiss, Friends of Kolmar Park, Senator Sarah Feigenholtz, and @ChicagoParks Board President Myetie Hamilton and Vice President Modesto Valle.
