Wanted to share this video that @katgraham posted recently of an exchange between her and her makeup artist. Sometimes the trauma of being the Token Black Girl doesn’t make an appearance until much later. There’s an acute sense of survival that kicks into high gear especially in situations where some sort of dream is being realized. In that case, you don’t mind doing more work than everyone else or being forgotten, overlooked or silenced. I’m not speaking for Kat here, just myself (!) but the reason I wanted to share her video is because it’s also so nice to witness someone on the other side of a toxic work situation grateful and thriving. So, yes, hang in there. It can and does get better and as we spread more awareness about this my hope is that all Black girls are seen, appreciated and most importantly PAID in every professional setting.
