Seven U.S. Indigenous tribes have been fighting for over a decade to get back their ancestors’ remains, which are being displayed in museums belonging to the University of Alabama.⁣ ⁣ A recently completed inventory shows the University of Alabama is in possession of over 10,000 Indigenous human remains and 1,500 funerary objects. The remains are believed to belong to seven Muskogean language-speaking tribes: the Muscogee Nation, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the Chickasaw Nation, the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, Alabama-Quassarte Tribal Town, the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. ⁣ ⁣ The university had been long accused of resisting the tribes’ requests for repatriation. But in Nov. 2021, a review committee found evidence for cultural affiliation, allowing the repatriation process to begin following an inventory.⁣ ⁣ ...⁣ Producer: Allison Vosloh #MoundvilleArchaeologicalPark #UniversityOfAlabama #Repatriation #MuskogeanLanguage #MuscogeeNation #ChoctawNation #ChickasawNation #CoushattaTribe #AlabamaQuassarteTribalTown #SeminoleNation #Alabama #Indigenous
