I used to think a “Cowboy” lived on a ranch, drove a flatbed Ford and drank Pendleton sevens at the Mint Bar on Friday’s. I thought a cowboy was a life sentence Wrangler wedgie and no shorts, ever. I thought Cowboys were the guys who showed up at the skatepark with balled fists as ice breakers when their girlfriends decided maybe love was punk rock and handrails not rough-stock and hay bails. I thought “Cowboy” was an aesthetic. And now, I’d like to use three words in context that might save America if we start sayin’ it too much... “I was wrong.” After crossing state lines, international borders, seas, oceans and made-up party lines we think actually exist - I’ve learned that what I grew up thinking was “them” really was “us.” “The Cowboy Way” isn’t a fashion statement. It’s not a truck. It’s not a hat, kerchief, billfold or bolo. “The Cowboy Way” is my upbringing. It’s where I come from. It’s the value of a handshake, eye contact, compassion, love, mercy, hard work, discipline, grit, determination, truth and some yeehaw when the work’s on pause.
