We are what we consume. I believe that food is not just made up of macro and micronutrients, but also a cosmic web of energy that affects every cell in our bodies. What you eat matters. Why you eat matters. How it was grown, harvested and cared for matters.
I love farmers markets because the food is fresh, you get to meet the farmers and you get to be reminded of the bounty and beauty of Mother Nature.
Here are a few tips on how I navigate a farmers market.
1. Know that just because it’s a farmers market, does not mean everything is chemical free. This is not to scare you, rather to implore you to meet the hands that grew your food and make sure you share the same values.
2. Most farms that take the care, time and money to NOT use toxic chemical on their land and produce is likely going to let you know (like @quartonfarm in photo).
3. Never be shy about asking about their practices. Any farmer who shares your values will be so happy to talk to you about it. Ask if they’re organic, either certified or in practice. You can ask how they manage pests, harvesting and soil health.
4. When it comes to meat and fish, ask what the animals are fed (esp in winter), how they’re cared for and how much outdoor time they get. For example I love the farmed fish from @hudsonvalleyfisheries. You might think farmed fish is automatically bad, but that’s not the case. If it’s a closed loop system and they care well for their fish, it can be better than wild. They also test for heavy metals and parasites.
5. Supporting local farms is more important than ever. Spend your money there! Plus it’s usually cheaper than store bought produce and higher quality.
