I moved into NYC a week before Christina Yuna Lee was stabbed to death in her own home. About a month prior to this, Michelle Go was fatally pushed into an incoming subway train. A few days ago, seven Asian women were attacked within two hours.. all unprovoked. My dear sister @defiant.changemaker sent me pepper spray. I was terrified of entering a subway station and not making it back out.
We are hurting. We are angry. We are grieving for all the victims of the recent anti-Asian violence (plus the ones that go unnoticed by mainstream news coverage).
But we are resilient and strong. In times of senseless tragedy, our community comes together. We hold each other. We heal together. We create art. We move through the pain. We refuse to hide and shrink because we deserve to take up space and feel safe in our country.
Protect Asian women & femmes. Please hear us. We do not have to justify our existence. Unlearn what you have learned in Eurocentric academia. Practice intersectionality in your activism. Understand how the intersections of racism, classism, misogyny, and decades of Western imperial wars in Asia have led to these heartbreaking, interconnected stories.
Thank you @nataliejphotos for organizing this photo project and capturing us so powerfully. Sending love and healing to all victims and survivors of violence. If you are able to, please consider donating to these local, NYC based organizations: @redcanarysong @safewalksnyc @iamwomankind @heartofdinner @jointhecosmos
