I’m stoked to let you all know that I’m currently co-producing the fifth Tesseract album. I’ve been a fan of the band since their inception and have had the pleasure of collaborating with several members on other projects in the past so it’s a genuine honour to be working on this record. Drum tracking has now been completed. Working with Jay was fantastic. We started a dialogue nearly a year ago, discussing interpretation of Acle’s demos, his learning process, sounds and kit setup. This has without a doubt been the most detailed, focused and rewarding heavy drum tracking process of my career. No stone has been left unturned in our journey for the ultimate performance and sound. Jay's lifetime dedication to mastering his instrument made every moment of tracking a joy. Any time the process became challenging he elevated his focus and professionalism delivering a stunning performance! I haven't posted any nerdy tech info in a while, so I will be sharing every detail of the drum tracking setup here over the next few days. First, a general overview of the kit. We started out with Jay's touring kit, a DW Design Series Acrylic set. 8, 10 & 12" rack toms were selected along with an 18" floor on Jay's right. This was supplemented with a Q Drum Co 18" floor on the left for supreme weight and width during building sections. After extensive comparison the DW kick was substituted for a Yamaha Recording Custom 22x16". We did at one point trial a full RC kit, but decided that the DW toms really spoke in the room and allowed for a significantly deeper tuning. A DW 14x6.5" Stainless Steel Snare fitted with an Evans Heavyweight batter head was selected. Jay's Meinl cymbal array was augmented with a number of additions to provide greater voicing and dynamic versatility. Most significantly a set of X hats and a 22" crash on the far right of the kit giving a significant step up for the most aggressive sustained dynamic passages.
