This video is a portrait of Kofi Mingo, a dancer and community teacher based in East London. Kofi began dancing 17 years ago. His style a unique combination of bboy, rave culture and martial arts such as Capoeira and Qi Gong. Largely self taught he approaches each performance as a mind scape or internal conversation which presents itself physically, often in a freestyle. Shot late last summer, Kofi began working with a poem I had written, we talked and shared our experiences from the first wave. The choreography explored themes of tension and unrest and originally was shot a lot darker and more sinister but I wanted to end with a positive message, expressing much like now a renewed sense of freedom; to move and create together.
