It’s truly a surreal moment to see our thoughts about AAPI Heritage month in Times Square. Thank you to @Sephora for this opportunity and for giving us the platform to speak to causes that are deeply meaningful to us. I’m very often reminded of both how far things have come but also how far we have to go, living in NYC. Coming to this city over a decade ago, it was a revelation that there was a space so diverse and bustling, that I could occupy it without constantly being made aware of being ‘different’. The tragic incidents over the last few years however, have been an abrupt reminder of how fragile this sense of security and belonging can be for so many. My hope is that we continue to have challenging and difficult conversations and to come together as a larger community to support one another. I’m also a big believer in helping to tell AAPI stories as this highlights the nuanced intricacies of so many different cultures, traditions and people within the AAPI community - and acknowledging this is the first step to overcoming stereotyping that creates often dangerous prejudices and denies the individuality of the minority experience. This month we’re also incredibly excited to announce our first ever collaboration in May with 8 AAPI brands and founders from different backgrounds and walks of life who deeply inspire me every day.
