Farewell, Dad 爸爸,一路走好 My dad passed away last night. He was an artist, a painter, a photographer also a graphic designer, even tho I have never seen any design work from him. Ironically enough, he never wanted me to study art & design because he had a tough career and he didn’t want that for his son. But that didn’t stop him and my mom for supporting me and my career. Like many father & son relationships in a traditional Chinese household, I wouldn’t say that I’m close to him. Only so often a few words were exchanged between us. But we have this saying “everything is in the unspoken 一切尽在不言中“ I can feel his love and care without him saying it out loud. I love his paintings, it’s always so energetic and peaceful at the same time. Maybe I got my sense of color and exuberance from him. I’m sad but I’m more sad about the fact I can’t go home to China and be there for him and my mom. In fact I haven’t been able to go home to see them for the past four years. As an only child with elderly parents, this is hard. The feeling that you can’t go to the funeral to say goodbye is also hard. But I feel that what we can do for the people who has passed on is to live as hard and as well as we can. I’m happy that you are at a better place, love you, dad. 爸爸,我爱你。
