CNF – diving without no fins – some thoughts and statistics . I think from an athletic point of view, it is the hardest discipline in freediving and underestimated by many, mostly because numbers are not so impressive to an audience compared to “deeper” disciplines. When you hear 131m it is much more impressive than “just 102m”. This year I trained a lot of time with William Trubridge and I can clearly see how he mastered most of the details of it, at a young age. . Apart from other depth disciplines, there is no equipment that we can master and propel to new depths. World records in monofin and bifins can be driven by equipment advancement, i.e. athletes can have the same capabilities but if there is advancement in technology, it can add a few meters. FIM to some extent is also dependent on the gear (how thick and stretchable the rope is, is the platform perfectly solid or bouncing, surface waves etc.) That can’t be said for CNF. Your muscles are the gear and they can be improved to a certain age and later they degrade. . Therefore, that’s why I think WR established by William will stand a long time being unbeaten. In other disciplines there are factors like narcosis, equalization, decompression sickness, lungs flexibility, technique to use particular gear and more. All of that is less of a concern in CNF and it’s brought because of external equipment to particular disciplines (i.e. you would not have to learn how to EQ better or deal with narcosis if you didn't have a fin that let you descent to those depth at first place - rely on external factors) . I believe our oxygen capabilities will allow us to dive deeper in all of those “equipment” dependent disciplines, but because all other mentioned factors it takes much more time to master them, but the issue is not necessarily hypoxia because we have not reached human peak there, there is handful of freedivers who can consistently equalize at those depths, so the sample size is very small.
