Does this haircut make me look gay? Three years ago I decided to let my hair grow long enough to donate, at least 10 inches, last night I decided to finally chop all 14 inches off. Before that I rocked anywhere between a pixie to a bob for about ten years. As a child I dreamed of having hair in every color of the rainbow and from ages 13 to 24 I did just that. I used my hair to announce my queerness in a world that constantly questions my dyke identity because I am femme. Allowing myself to have longer hair, in its natural color has helped me heal some of my own internalized femmephobia. I’m just as queer with long locks as I am with this buzz cut, and just as visible. I’ll miss whipping my hair around while I dance, but honestly last night when I felt the first cut I felt light and a sense of joy. Happy #lesbianvisiblityday to the lesbians with long hair, to fat lesbians, poor lesbians, BIPOC lesbians, disabled lesbians, lesbians of all genders, lesbians who feel invisible, lesbians who understand the complexities of visibility, lesbians who don’t identify that way yet, those that once did and don’t anymore.
