🎉 Announced today: the major construction work for the Art Gallery's expansion is now complete, with our new building on track to open its doors on Saturday 3 December. In today’s announcement, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said that the expansion bolsters Sydney's reputation as one of the world’s cultural capitals. 'The new building is an architectural masterpiece befitting of some of the world’s finest artworks,' said Mr Perrottet, 'and we can’t wait to welcome the public in December.' Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA, our new building combines striking design with excellence in sustainability, almost doubling the space for art. The new building celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, with our internationally renowned collection showcased in a permanent gallery on entrance level. Three art pavilions with new galleries, a 250-metre rammed earth wall sweeping through two floors, and a spectacular art space created from a decommissioned WWII oil tank, are among the new building’s highlights. The completion of major construction work opens a new chapter in the Sydney Modern Project story – stay tuned for more exciting news on our expanded art museum, coming soon! __ Architect @sanaa_jimusho Executive Architect @Architectusau Builder @richardcrookesconstructions Sydney Modern Project construction timelapse Nov 2019–Sep 2022
