Paddling to the base of Shoshone Falls (aka the ‘Niagara Falls of the West’) was such a fun adventure! Shoshone Falls is 212 feet high, which is taller than Niagara Falls!
🚣🏼♀️ The journey is 8 miles round trip and we rented kayaks from @awoladventuresports1. This journey is strenuous, takes 5-6 hours and involves a 200 yard portage. Be sure to check the water levels in the canyon before heading out, as it can be very dangerous if the water is too high.
💪🏼 The portage area was really difficult for me with the tandem kayak. A single kayak would be a bit easier to carry!
🪂 Along the way, you get to enjoy views of the Perrine Memorial Bridge (where you might see base jumpers), Pilar Falls (this is where you will portage) and the surrounding canyon.
💦 Seeing the waterfall up close (but not too close) was such a cool experience! You could really feel the waves in the water and the mist of the falls.
📸 If you don’t want to paddle, you should definitely still catch a viewpoint of the waterfall from above at Shoshone Falls Park.
⚠️ One of the principles of leaving no trace is planning ahead and preparing. Be sure to check water levels, bring everything you need and research ahead of time for this journey. In addition, pack out all trash and respect this beautiful area.
Would you like to go on this adventure or would you rather stick to the overlook?
Thank you to @wanderlustinreallife for the footage of us portaging, she was with us on this adventure too!
