From the pulpit to the pavement, Dr. King joined with other Civil Rights Movement leaders and organized boycotts, protests and demonstrations across the country. Becoming a national figure, he gave his most famous speech - "I Have A Dream" - on the National Mall at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. Even after an assassin's bullet ended his life in 1968, Dr. King's legacy continues to grow. In 2011, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial opened on the National Mall. Commonly called Martin Luther King, Jr. Day or MLK Day, the third Monday of January is designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Many national parks host a variety of service projects that people can sign up for as volunteers.
