Most people who know me in real life associate me primarily with South Carolina (where I grew up) and New York (where I was born and have been my entire adult life). But there's an Alabama chapter in there that fewer folks are as aware of. I am, indeed, "a daughter of Mother Tuskegee." My paternal family is all up and through several aspects of Tuskegee history, from my great-grandma Kelly, a then-Tuskegee Institute Dean of Women; to my uncle David, who left high school to tour with The Commodores. This is the second time I've gotten an "I know yo' people" message from someone in/from Tuskegee after hearing me on NPR, and I'm just happy I'm doing the family name proud. Also, my Dad is somewhere with his chest out and his head up saying "Yessir. That's my daughter."
