The premier for the short doc “Dawoud Bey: The Landscape of Slavery” by filmmaker Bron Moyi @bronmoyi took place this past Saturday at the Toulouse Theater in New Orleans, screening as the introduction to my conversation with Brian Piper @piper804 “Dawoud Bey: Landscape and Memory” during PhotoNOLA and in conjunction with my @prospect_nola P5 exhibition at the Historic New Orleans Collection. The documentary was filmed at Evergreen Plantation between 2019 and 2021. Bron has worked as director of photography and cinematographer on a number of films, including recently the music video for Jon Batiste’s “Freedom,” which is nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Music Video category. There’s a very strong film community in New Orleans and Bron Moyi is one of those talented filmmakers in the Crescent City. I met Garrett Bradley there before she moved west, and Phillip Youman, Zandashé Brown, and Angela Tucker are others. Bron also brought his fine skills as cinematographer to my three-channel video work “Evergreen.” I’m looking to continue working with Bron again as I further engage the moving image in my work. Great work Bron! (Photos #2 and #4 by @visionsandverbs L. Kasimu Harris)
