❤️WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO UNLEARN YOUR RACIST HABITS?❤️
‘I’m half South American’
When I discovered where Guyana was geographically (I think in my late teens) I would say it with such pride. A pride that felt closer proximity to whiteness. If you remember, this feels similar to when some people (including myself) would say ‘I’m not African, I’m Caribbean’... 👀
I’ve only just properly acknowledged the damage I was doing by inwardly encouraging the idea that being from this part of the world gave me a one up. Colonised as South America was, is? it was much closer to whiteness than my former beliefs of being from the Caribbean (which really isn’t that further away). That internalised racism really comes through if you don’t catch it 🥲
🧬 I did a DNA test a couple years back which show a fuller list of my ancestry and my gosh, I am a mongrel 😂 and obviously, lots of me is African - mostly Nigerian 🇳🇬 Let’s see how the research changes over time as it accounts for slavery travels. If you wanna see it, DM and I’ll share. I find that shit f a s c i n a t i n g 🧬
Feel free to share a racist habit you’re unlearning / have discovered recently. This one I’m sharing was from yesterday’s thoughts. It can be as new / old / big / small as you like. If you too shhhh to share, be brave and have a little think to yourself. And remember to do it with love. It‘s not your fault you racist 💕 Love you 💕 we just out here learning how to live xox
