I’m a bit late for #worldafroday but better late than never 🤷🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ I’m going back down memory lane to share a few pics of me and my loved ones sporting Afros through the years. Back in the day, you were judged by how sturdy and full your “bush” was. I HATED it! I’ll never forget my mom and grandmom fighting about my hair. My mom needed me to know that I didn’t need long, straightened hair to be attractive. I had to know that I was naturally beautiful, that my beauty did not lie in my hair and she was going to teach me that lesson... at FIVE YEARS OLD!! So, she took me to THE BARBER SHOP and had him cut ALL of my hair off!!! I looked like young Michael Jackson! I was MORTIFIED, TRAUMATIZED and HATED my bush AND my mom for YEARS!!! Here we are 182 years later and I’ve not had a relaxer in decades. I still struggle with my hair (literally, it’s soooo tangly) but I can do ANYTHING with it... and I do.
