Scenes from the recent speaker series @thegaragechi with @bret_gornik
.
During his address to the folks who attended, Bret brought up the concept of Ikigai, a Japanese term roughly meaning “a reason for being”. It seeks to help us ask relevant questions about our selves to come a certain intersection where we might find a more purposeful existence. I personally found it an incredibly helpful, concrete, codified way to explore the analogous concept found when Joseph Campbell tells us to “follow our bliss”. How can we follow our bliss if we can’t in some way define it? Ikigai gives us a path to do so, that forces us to ask deep questions while also taking in to account the practical realities of need to pay bills and exist in a capitalist world.
.
On the last slide I’ve included a diagram that shows the different precepts of Ikigai and their subsequent intersections. As an exercise, explore and make lists of everything that might fit into each of the four main categories, completely separate of one another. Sky’s the limit. Then, compare lists and see where the intersections are. What do they tell you about any directional shifts you may want to make?
