I’ve painted through 2 pregnancies (one still in progress) countless hard times, and even more good. At times, it is the only language I’m fluent in. I painted through my adolescence and into womanhood, never once did I have a show or solo exhibition. It is not as important as the work itself. Instead I am shapeshifting. In fact, I insist that my creative life is just beginning. I’m entering my third trimester and I must say that every pregnancy, hard as they can be physically and otherwise, has the potential to take you to powerful, sacred, and creative mental spaces which can also help you during child birth. It is in my nature to believe that these bodily changes also give us the opportunity to rewire our brains if we are willing to become a new person. What artist hasn’t survived a sleepless night? The work of a woman postpartum is valuable. Motherhood is not the death of creative life, it should be seen as a catalyst into the boldest and most intentional works. After all, who is a better problem solver, more adaptive, who has more endurance, more grit, than a mother?
