A Victorian Liberal senator who once voted against restoring territory euthanasia rights says she now supports them.
Jane Hume says her father’s death under Victoria’s voluntary assisted dying laws had changed her views.
Senator Hume wept as she discussed her father Steve’s cancer diagnosis and his decision to end his life.
“I once voted against this legislation, but I will be voting in favour of it today,” she told parliament.
The Senate is debating a bill that, if passed, will allow the Northern Territory and ACT to make their own euthanasia laws.
For 25 years, a federal veto has prevented the territories from creating these laws, which exist in every Australian state. #Euthanasia #TerritoryRights #VoluntaryAssistedDying
