Toms, not as sexy as the kick and snare, but still a key component of the kit not to be ignored.
We used Jay’s perspex DW toms for the record. 8, 10 & 12” rack toms and an 18” floor on his right. We supplemented this with my Q Drum Co 18” on his left.
We did audition my Yamaha RC toms, but they didn't have the depth of the DW's, even though they did offer more bright attack. We selected Evans G2 over G1 clear heads.
The perspex toms has a naturally low pitch centre and suited the material well. We tuned the racks to be harmonically complimentary to the song with a nice amour of natural sustain with no damping.
The floors were tuned as low as they’d comfortably sit, short and dry.
After some careful comparison I was surprised to discover I preferred the classic Sennheiser 421 on the rack toms. I tried Josephson E22’s and AKG 414’s and they just didn’t feel right. I ended up using the E22’s on the floor toms one above and one below to capture the low end bloom and sub.
I used the Trident console preamps and EQ, making aggressive moves. The floor tom mics were summed in the console. You’ll see that I removed everything but the low end from the tom bottom mics and flipped the phase. This worked really well, I often don’t bother with this level of detail, but it really paid off!
If I had 5 more DBX 160's I would have had them on the toms for sure, but I don't. I'm sure a plugin will suffice...
