As most of you already know I don’t do celebrities. I never have. Ever since I was a kid when I was probably 7 years old and was pushed towards the front of the crowd to watch a ‘celebrity’ cut the ribbon during the opening of a shopping centre in our village. I was the kid sitting on the pavement turned with her back towards the commotion in the picture the next day in our local newspaper. I believe it’s my analytical brain that refuses to buy into the hype. I like what is real, I like facts, I like truth, I like to make up my own mind and I hate to be told what to do or what to believe. That is just me. At the end of the day, this helps with my job as I capture creatives passionate about their craft, not celebrities. While not working I did catch some snippets of the Depp vs Heard trial that went on the past six weeks in Fairfax, Virginia, in all fairness it was hard to miss. I didn’t watch it through popular media, because as you know by now, I like unbiased facts and figures, so I caught it through @theemilydbaker youtube channel as she’s a lawyer who provides unbiased comments and insights into the law. You go Emily! Then I got commissioned by Jeff Beck to shoot both Royal Albert Hall shows and I found myself face to face with Johnny Depp. I was as per usual totally unfazed by whatever hype surrounded him but captured both him and Beck as artist thoroughly enjoying the music they created. Then something weird and totally off script occurred. On the stairs towards the stage I ran into Johnny Depp's bodyguard, Malcolm Connolly who had been one of the witnesses called to the stand during the trial of Depp vs Heard, and for a split second I was a little starstruck. I know! It made me giggle. Just the notion that I am unruffled in the presence of what are considered, by popular view, the greatest celebrities in the world but I run into a bodyguard who made a guest appearance during a trial and I’m struck. You cannot escape the humour in that. Loved capturing both Beck and Depp on stage though, they both are very passionate about their craft which was very interesting to capture.
