A lot of people have asked how to help and support our family and most importantly our son who is experiencing brutal racial biases at his school. 1. Stop protecting your white children from a truth that doesn’t hurt them. Shielding them is you supporting and enabling racism in schools/playgrounds/sports etc. 2. Educate your children so that they know how to identify racism so that they can then stand up and speak up in these situations. Their black and brown friends need white support. 3. Ask your kids questions about their school day. Ask how their friends are doing. Ask if anyone is touching, yelling at or shaming any of the students. Ask if anyone is being sent to the principal, find out if the teacher is impatient with any of the students. Ask if any of their classmates are sad or upset. 4. If you let white kids witness mistreatment of black and brown classmates without any explanations, they will learn that their black and brown friends are scary and bad. But if we teach them to question and witness and be an ally they will see the situations for what they are and can provide support. Now, if this makes you feel defensive- think again and then start by educating yourself on the matter before teaching your kids. Much love, K.
