Frieda Zamba, Rocky Point 1981. It was a Saturday. I had wanted to shoot the water angle and it looked just right for it. A west swell and as always many good surfers. The rip tide pulling you towards Haleiwa was really strong. You had to back paddle the whole time getting pulled towards the pack and constant threats of being caught inside. I fired off the roll of film quickly and focused on getting in on sand rather than reef. My flip flops were still right there on the reef, but as I realized my car keys were missing I started to sift through the sand. Many friends laughed at the futileness of trying to find them. No one helped. I called a key replacement guy who came out from Wailua and watched him hunt and peck for two hours in his mobile key replacement truck while it poured rain. Finally his silence was broken with an "Aha" and he found the blank right under his nose. Numerous other key loss incidents inspired my friend Nick Benuska ( @nick_benuska ) to always carry a slim jim in his car just for me. Whenever I call, his first question would be "Have you lost your keys”?
