Tesseract V overeheads... We settled on a simple spaced pair of Neumann KM184’s which offered a clear detailed image of the cymbal array with no nasty peaks or whistles which Acle is very sensitive to! AKG 414 ULS’s and a pair of Coles 4038 were briefly auditioned, both were immediately rejected. I tweaked the positioning to get the most pleasing and balanced image of the cymbal array. I like to keep the cymbals wide to leave space in the centre of the mix for the vocals and snare. It was a bit challenging given the array that Jay amassed, but we made it work. Jay's Meinl cymbal collection was augmented with a number of additions to provide greater voicing and dynamic versatility. Most significantly a set of X hats and a 22" crash on the far right of the kit giving a significant step up for the most aggressive sustained dynamic passages. I was gentle with the Trident console preamps, leaving plenty of headroom, just a hint of transient taming and a pinch of top added on the EQ. A ran the console direct outs into a Sound Skulptor SSL style compressor with a fast attack and release just tickling the snare for a bit of excitement.
