Sunday was closing night of On Sugarland. Wow. I performed on stage in NYC at @nytw79. My Off Broadway debut. I got to work with some of the coolest people and pushed through my fear and anxiety about being on stage again after years away. I am grateful to @aleshea.harris and @yesimwhitneywhite for giving me the opportunity to stretch myself and be a part of bringing this play to life. And I am grateful to my ancestors, whom I feel a little closer to after playing Sadie. That’s who I dedicated my last performances to: to my familial ancestors, but also the Black Women who came before me in this industry, who fought and broke through so many barriers so that I can dream even bigger. After our final performance, an audience member came up to me and said watching me perform made her think of Dorothy. I was initially confused and then she made a comment related to The Wiz. But she kept repeating this statement that I reminded her of Dorothy. And something about that was tugging at me. And then I remembered my closing dedication to the Black Women who came before me in my family and in this industry and was reminded of what the name Dorothy means to me. My grandmother’s name is Dorothy and I was reminded of Dorothy Dandridge as well. I was properly shooketh when I put that together. Ancestors be listening, bruh 😂😂 So incredibly grateful for this journey ❤️
