What I love about the body - probably the thing I love most about the human body in fact - is how it is both incredibly clever and very, very cute. Take for example, this quote from one of my favourite books: “The most remarkable part of all is your DNA. You have a metre of it packed into every cell, and so many cells that if you formed all the DNA in your body into a single fine strand it would stretch ten billion miles, to beyond Pluto. Think of it: there is enough of you to leave the solar system. You are in the most literal sense cosmic.” - Bill Bryson ‘The Body.’ And then, in the shadow of this cosmic and biological brilliance that is our body, we have the fact that some humans sneeze when they get horny. We have hiccups, we are bioluminescent in the dark (our human eyes just can’t pick up the light), and we have wrinkled brains because they are actually folded inside the skull. So bizarre. With a great deal of bathos, our bodies can lay claim to an epic history evolving from stardust all the way to the anticlimax of a queef. It really is the most sublime, yet utterly ridiculous thing.
