@officialevercarradine has taken over lighting and camera. Big ups to her for making this video look good and for making it as painless and fun as possible. This is the first song on The record, Daylight. The song was a wish I made between two very hard, long stays in the hospital that ate up most of August and September that year. I'd been peeled back as far as I could go and I just wanted it to be over. I felt so far out in the black of space, like Major Tom trying to head for home. I was in dire need of the warm rays of the sun. I just wanted a sign that I was moving in the right direction, just a little bit of violet and red that meant there would be a morning back on Earth. I was babysitting a beautiful gut string Spanish guitar for Ever's Uncle Dave that was one of a kind, much like him. It just sounded like nothing else and I regularly lost track of time playing it because it made everything sound so full and rich. I was also on a big Cat Stevens kick, morning has broken and all of that. He's a master of plainspoken, sturdy songs and I was trying to come up with one of my own. It was one of the first songs I played for @thechaletstudio / Will when we were doing pre-production for Stars & Curses. I thought maybe it was too simple, that perhaps what had seemed like a good idea was, in fact, a terrible one. But I didn't have enough finished material to get picky, so we went ahead with it. That's @scottlorenzini on the drums, Will Golden on the bass, David Immergluck aka @alchemikalartz playing that beautiful pedal steel and those electric guitars. @philipofthedeep blessed us with the piano and organ. For the longest time, the horns were these awful sampled trumpets - I think they're actually blended in with the amazing ones that we got from Mike Armstrong. Hope you dig it.
