On Friday, 15-year-old Brandon Perez and 14-year-old Nathan Billegas were shot and killed, and two other 15-year-old students were wounded, just outside Benito Juarez Community Academy.⁠ ⁠ According to family members, Brandon and Nathan were close friends. Nathan was a student at Chicago Bulls College Prep and went to Benito Juarez to meet Brandon. He was on the phone with his sister when shots rang out.⁠ ⁠ Guns are the leading cause of death for young people in America. This senseless violence is preventable: No other high-income country has gun laws as lax as ours, and no other high-income country has a gun death rate as high as ours. ⁠ ⁠ Benito Juarez Community Academy is the latest among too many other schools that have been devastated by gun violence. Our hearts are with Brandon and Nathan’s loved ones, the survivors, and the entire community. ⁠ ⁠ We should not have to accept this reality.
