When I started designing this door I wanted to create a piece that would draw people inward. There is a psychological quality to creating a door. It literally shapes our movement between spaces. In the case of an exterior door it divides the outside from the inside. It provides a visual and tactile preview of the experience within. I saw the carvings on this door functioning as an allegory. Beginning at the bottom would be some of the elemental parts of nature. Mushrooms, snails, soil, dust. Things which are easy to recognize but elude our complete understanding. The carvings evolve into plants and flowers as your eye moves upward. While the orientation is vertical, the narrative is cyclical. The top carvings depict the heavens with stars and planets, leaving you in a similar place from where you began: drawn in close, curiously peering at some minute detail, and internalizing a sense of our scale in the world.
