When Robert walks into Kelsie’s store, they greet him like they do every customer. But rather than saying “hello,” they tap him on the shoulder, puts her hand under his and waves before leading him to the counter. Robert is Deafblind, and Kelsie communicates with him using a combination of American Sign Language (ASL) and Tactile Sign Language (TSL) that she learned from another barista who is Deaf. Today, Kelsie is passing on that knowledge to others. Teaching other partners (employees) how to communicate with Robert is important to Kelsie. “It’s very life-giving to be able to have that moment or be able to connect with someone,” they say. “That is something I don’t want a customer to miss out on.” After Robert orders his usual, Kelsie asks him where he wants to sit before leading him to a table. Sometimes the two of them will sit and chat, usually about his gardening. Kelsie says she still signs at a beginner level, but Robert is always a patient listener. “He’s made me so much more thoughtful about the way I talk to people,” Kelsie says. “I don’t want anyone to feel like they’re not welcome or I wouldn’t go the extra mile to get to know them.”
