The one piece that grounds this kitchen is the honed quartzite countertops. It’s one of my go to choices based on the inherent properties and overall earthy feel. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock created from sandstone under high pressure. It is one of the most durable stones out there and ranks 7 on the Mohs hardness scale compared to marble (4) and even granite (6 to 6.5). It’s tougher than glass with higher heat and scratch resistance, more cost-efficient than marble, and has antibacterial properties. Of note, quartzite and quartz are not the same. Quartz is it’s synthetic counterpart made from aggregate and resin consisting of very different properties. To sum it up, quartzite is an incredible material that should be utilized more in kitchens and baths, not to mention it hails from the US, Canada, Brazil, and the UK which can assist in reducing our overall carbon footprint.
