I’ve noticed a lot of backlash in my feed about World Breastfeeding Week this year, and I just wanna add my two cents and say this:
Breastfeeding has innumerable benefits for both mother and baby. Unfortunately, we live in a society where those benefits also come with enormous sacrifices, because breastfeeding is really, REALLY hard work and there’s is not nearly enough support available for those who wish to breastfeed their babies for a length of time that feels right to both mother and child.
That is why World Breastfeeding Week exists - not so shame or diminish the experiences of those who couldn’t or didn’t want to, but to support and educate those who want and are able to breastfeed.
We all know that in the end it doesn’t matter how your baby is fed, because fed is (and always will be) best. Motherhood is the ride of a lifetime and we all deserve a medal, not judgement or shame for whatever choices we have made for the benefit of ourselves and our babies. But that doesn’t mean that people who’ve had beautiful and successful breastfeeding relationships should have to censor their achievements and joy, especially during World Breastfeeding Week.
I breastfed both of my children for almost two years - something I couldn’t have done without the education and support I was very lucky to have access to. Neither feeding journey was without its hiccups, but I am so proud of my body for growing, birthing and feeding two hungry babes all on it’s own, and for being able to help another mum when she didn’t have enough milk for her newborn.
If we can’t celebrate our bodies, share our trials and tribulations, tell our stories and educate others with cool breastfeeding facts and mind blowing statistics on World Breastfeeding Week of all weeks, then how can we expect society to step up, and offer the support breastfeeding folks need?? How can we expect current breastfeeding statistics to change??
Sending love to you all, no matter how your baby is fed 💛💛💛
